Interviews | Masculinity

Interviewee 1- Male:

Societally, what qualities do you think make someone ‘manly’?
"Taking action and being responsible for those actions. Facing problems head on and holding yourself accountable."
In greek life, what qualities do you think make someone ‘manly’?
“More of a  dominant type personality is perceived as manly, way more socially aggressive, an Alpha Male type”

Interviewee 2-Male:

Do you feel as if you are pushed into certain actions or activities to be considered more masculine?
“Yeah 100%, like buying people drinks and showing off wealth and being more confident in myself.”

Interviewee 3- Male:

Do you find that being in greek life has changed expectations for you to be masculine?
“I think so, especially when I live in the house with 40 or 45 other guys, it’s definitely a lot of guys all at once and a lot of varying aspects about who thinks what is ‘masculine.’ There’s a lot of different viewpoints and perspectives positive or negative just depending on the situation.”

Interviewee 4- Female:

What does a ‘classic’ male social media feed look like?
“It’s usually just really bad quality photos with a lot of the same boys in various different poses, usually lots of group shots.”
If you see the opposite of this, what do you think of the male that runs the account?
“I’m usually really impressed by that, but also part of me thinks that part of the reason why guys don’t put a lot of thought into [social media] is because they don’t care what other people think about them, which goes back to the confidence thing. So, he might be considered a little less manly if he’s kind of vain and obsessed with himself and takes a lot of time to edit his pictures.”
