Survey Results | Mascunlinity

Through the survey results, we can conclude that definitions or masculinity differ in greek life and society. Greek life has a greater emphasis on social life and drinking whereas in society there is greater emphasis on sexual relations and being trustworthy.
The survey results also show that social media has an effect on how males portray themselves as masculine. Males, because it is portrayed as feminine to post more, post less and consider how it reflects on them.

Both genders found that social activities were most clearly associated with fraternity life.  This was followed by friendships that males more commonly associated with fraternity life. Drinking was also a heavy association as well as hazing. The results found that Females had more associations with greek life; the more popular vote of philanthropic pursuits from females connects to our research question pertaining to social media. Fraternities largest contribution to social media is advertising their philanthropic endeavors, therefore seeming like it plays a larger role in fraternity life.
The following question provided the same possible responses but asked what participants associate with masculinity. Although sexual relations was not a common answer in the previous question, it held a strong association with masculinity. Both genders had similar responses with associating masculinity with academic success, friendship, and drinking. A separation occurred as females found that philanthropic pursuits and hazing had a correlation with masculinity (both of these answers had no association with the male participants). The male participants found that social activities had a strong correlation with masculinity. When comparing these responses to the associations with fraternity life, we can see that drinking and social activities have the most overlap.

Examples:
Female:
They may be considered more "manly" but that doesn't mean they are or that others are less manly

No, often times fraternities attempt to have a hypermasculine image but it does not define the image of the members.

Male:
Partially, greek life idolized being to an extend somewhat masculine, thus, many of the members try to achieve that goal. Thus, naturally, people tend to see Greek members are being more "manly".
------------------------------

These responses found that 5/18 participants thought that those that were not part of a fraternity were considered less manly.

How do you think that joining a fraternity changes expectations for masculinity?

Male:
There are larger expectations to be more masculine when in Greek life.

Expected consumption of alcohol. Social life

You are expected to become more masculine, strong, and devoted to your brothers

I don't think it does. I think a true man is someone who is honest and will stick up for what they believe in as well as be a good friend in any circumstance.

Female:

I think it shifts the focus from physical traits or vibes that one gives off making them masculine to a focus on mixing with girls as a determiner of masculinity

It may make them more likely to party and drink and more misogynistic

I don't think it does
------------------------------

This sample of responses shows the shift in expectations for masculinity in joining greek life. The majority of responses found there was a greater expectation to drink, be more social (emphasis on socializing with girls) and have a devotion to their brothers. Although less common, some did not see changes in expectations; saying that manliness if defined by someone honest and that will be a good friend.

What do you think would make someone more manly?
Male
Having a girlfriend.

Being a trustworthy, respectable, and courageous person

Deep voice, strong

Being honest and owning up to mistakes

Being nice to people

Female
